Christmas Brunch with Even Start

December 19, 2009

This morning’s brunch with Even Start was a blast!  We are so thankful to Pastor Jorge and his congregation for inviting us to join with them for this special event, and to First Baptist Church for opening up their beautiful fellowship hall for true fellowship to occur.

Iglesia Bautista Resureccion went all out for this significant morning: they set up gorgeous tables, complete with centerpieces and individualized place settings; shopped for all the ingredients for our amazing breakfast together; purchased and assembled gift bags of kitchen staples (like rice, black beans, oil and pasta) to give to each family; and put together little gift-boxes for each child.  They also donated & presented a few tables’ worth of clothing for fathers and mothers who wanted to do some Christmas “shopping.”

About 27 families from Even Start, almost the entire congregation from IBR, and several folks from New Hope shared a delicious meal of scrambled eggs, eggs-with-cheese, tortillas, bacon, sausage, pancakes, bagels, muffins, cereal, milk, juice and coffee.

Pastor Jorge gave a short message in Spanish, sharing about being the son of immigrant parents who wanted the best & brightest futures for their children, and now being a father who wants the same for his three daughters.  He commiserated with all of the gathered parents, encouraging them in this Christmas season to receive from God the most precious gift of His Son, Jesus Christ, just as they themselves would want to give their children precious gifts under the Christmas tree.

We parted ways after packing up leftovers and distributing the grocery gift-bags and gifts for the children.  It was such a highlight to be with the Even Start families again, and to see how the children are growing & thriving.  It was also particularly heartwarming to be greeted by many of the families with the words, “I remember you from New Hope!  I’m so happy to see you!”  This breakfast was truly an important step toward establishing and strengthening our community’s friendships with the Even Start community, as well as with our brothers & sisters at IBR.  We are excitedly looking forward to spending more time with our brethren up the street, and getting our intended service — like after-school homework assistance and basic English conversation groups — off the ground in the New Year.

Please pray and ask God if He might be moving your heart and calling you toward our friends at Even Start.  Robert and Cathy are always available to hear your thoughts and/or to pray with you, and would love to have you join the growing group of folks devoted to reaching out to our Tarrytown community.  All talents, time, skills, and — most importantly — compassion, are welcome …
