Book Review: “Humility,” by C.J. Mahaney

May 11, 2009

Humility by C.J. MahaneyIn various sermons, I’ve heard other pastors refer to C.J. Mahaney as one of the most humble pastors.  Several of us had a chance to see and hear him in person while at the Gospel Coalition conference. His humility and his love for our Saviour were so evident in his message and how he talked with many young pastors and leaders that had gathered around him during breaks.

And yet, C.J. Mahaney humbly starts the book, “I’m a proud man pursuing humility by the grace of God.” We need to hear C.J.’s warnings about pride and his encouragements to us about pursuing humility. He reminds us that lack of humility is an abomination to our Lord:  “I hate pride and arrogance” (Proverbs 8:13, NIV).

C.J. uses his own experiences and Biblical teaching to show us how to weaken pride and cultivate humility. His suggestions, such as identifying evidence of grace in others, are practical and deeply rooted in Scripture.  This is a great little book by a very humble man, who constantly points us to the wonder of the Cross and to Christ, who “was always humble and never proud – and still is, and always will be.”
