Volunteer! Hillside Food Outreach

December 16, 2008

The Hillside Food Outreach’s orientation session will be held at 10 AM, Sat., 12/20, and will last 45 min to an hour. It is required for those who would like to volunteer starting in January. HFO matches each volunteer with a needy person who is elderly, poor, disabled, ill, or unable to visit a food pantry. Each volunteer visits the needy person in his/her home and brings groceries on a regular, ongoing basis one Saturday a month. HFO provides the bags of groceries, which volunteers pick up at the HFO warehouse in Thornwood.

Orientations are held every month, except Jan. ’09, so the next one after 12/20 will be in Feb. Volunteers may bring children when making visits, but are asked not to bring children on the first visit. This gives people a chance to decide for themselves whether the environment is OK for their children. Volunteers are asked to make a commitment of at least 8 months.

This Saturday,  Cathy C. is offering to pick up people at church ( 4 riders max.) to go together to the orientation. Address of Hillside Food Outreach: 17 Gramercy Place, Thornwood, NY (914) 747-0095.

Directions: Saw Mill River Parkway north to Thornwood exit #5; right on Marble Ave. (0.2 m.); left at Broadway (0.2); left at light at Garrigan Ave. (across from Town Center -Shoprite); then 2nd left at Madison; another left at end of road at Gramercy Pl.; go about one block to Hillside Outreach (sign of Building) on left. Parking behind building).

As of today, HFO is still short about 60 volunteers.
