CompTooter Addiction Begone!

February 28, 2009

I’ve heard that there are a few of us, usually men, that mysteriously disappear into a magic box when they get home. This box is sometimes called a “Computer” or “Kingdom Domination Simulator” or “Responsibility Compactor” or “I’m Actually Working Reflector.” For those of us <!cough!> that occasionally lose track of time when surfing the InterWebs, etc., the following tool can help: E.ggTimer.com!

T-Minus 43s to go!

The Power of Christ compels you!

EggTimer is about as simple as you can get. The cool thing is, you can control how long of a countdown you want by typing directly into the URL (e.g., http://E.ggTimer.com/1hour). As the “/1minute” screenshot suggests, the black lines at the top and bottom of your browser window will gradually move to the right as time runs out. I find the timer helps me structure my time. I don’t keep it on-screen all the time (that would be too stressful!), but the knowledge that E.ggTimer is ticking down subdues my more insidious procrastination tendencies.

So go ahead, disappear into the magic box! Just set a boundary condition. E.ggTimer’s ounce of prevention will  help you avoid a ‘we have to talk’ moment.

Apologies for the late posting of these pics. The concert was a few weeks ago, but NHF certainly did its part in filling the venue! Click on the photo for a larger version.

February “Name That Tune”

February 23, 2009

February was short and sweet, but our worship definitely wasn’t!  We hope you were blessed to be drawn into the presence of the Lord, and that He touched your heart in a new way, with a new love, this month as we worshiped Him together.

Again, please feel welcome to contact John K., Jenny A., or any member of the Worship Team if you’d like to know more about the praise songs we sang together this month.

Movie Review: “Doubt”

February 16, 2009

Raimund shares with us after watching “Doubt” with Maria … share your thoughts and your own reviews in Comments.

***

A trusted friend recommended that I watch the movie “Doubt,” so Maria and I went to see the movie.

“Doubt” is a powerful movie which presents us with the kind of problem we face in the real world.  Most movies follow the standard Disney-movie prescription of a world of good and evil where the good always wins and in the end, everybody lives happily ever after.  There is a reason why we like to watch those kinds of movies, but it can be refreshing to occasionally encounter a movie like “Doubt” where we won’t simply walk out with the ‘fairy tale, live happily ever after’ frame of mind.

Testimony: Grace Fabien

February 16, 2009

Yesterday, February 15th, NHF had the privilege of hosting Grace Fabien (Wycliffe Bible Translators) as a speaker during Worship.

She also was the guest lecturer for yesterday evening’s Perspectives class.  The class was able to hear Grace’s testimony of her time in Papua New Guinea in more detail — her life story, and the evidence of God’s movement in it to bless not only her and her family but to bring blessed & joyous glory to Himself, is incredibly moving and inspirational.

If you haven’t heard it before and missed it last night, you can hear Grace’s story here.

By now, you all must have heard about the crash of Continental Flight 3407 near Buffalo, killing 50 people.  Admittedly and tragically, there are bigger catastrophes occurring around the world all the time. For all of these, our hearts should break, and we should be constantly on our knees before God.

But for some reason, last night and through today, this local and relatively-small event has really weighed greatly on my heart. I feel a very acute sense of loss, a heavy sense of sadness, and a deeper urgency to ask God for clarity and for His sovereignty to lie strongly over the victims’ families & friends.

Nerds + Church = Tony Steward

February 11, 2009

In researching various potential web-related products for our church, I ran across Unifyer,  a social-networking service. More interesting, however, are some of the interviews offered on the site. If you are interested in how technology and the church intersect, take a look at the video interview with Tony Steward. He discusses how the internet is redefining traditional definitions of community. I can’t link to the video directly because the site is flash based, but I’ve included a screenshot of the site below. Just surf to the Unifyer site, click on Demo Videos, and look for the guy in the red circle.

Jonathan Edwards

Image via Wikipedia

John Piper leads us to a great new resource: the complete works of Jonathan Edwards online via Yale University. I had no idea Edwards’ grandfather preached in Northampton, MA!

The reason all this matters is not merely that Edwards is the poster boy of intellectual American Historians, but, even more importantly, that, using the lens of Scripture, he saw and believed and described the greatest realities in the universe in ways that few of us would ever see on our own. He saw Jesus Christ through whom and for whom all things exist. And he saw the Gospel—that Christ died for our sins and rose again to be Lord of all.
